Suffocation: Suffocation

After returning to the death metal scene back in 2004 with Souls to Deny, New York's Suffocation once again look to devastate the extreme metal world with their new self-titled release. Combining relentless technical twin guitar riffs, thunderous blast beats, and growling death metal vocals, Suffocation have once again put together a brutal death metal experience here, showing that these accomplished veterans still have plenty of evil to dish out.

Superhuman guitar riffs abound on Suffocation, like on the crushing "Bind Torture Kill", and the technical mayhem of "Misconceived" and "Abomination Reborn", the former also home to an abundance of insane blast beats from Mike Smith. Singer Frank Mullen always had a pretty unique voice, and still does. His style might not be for everyone, but his thick, growling style actually makes it somewhat easy to understand what he is saying, which you can't always say for death metal vocalists. His haunting growls amidst some wild guitar excursions on "Translucent Patterns of Delirium" are pretty cool as he barks "shut up, shut up...yooouuuuuu" in perfect death metal fashion. As for the guitar riffery throughout the album, it's heavy as hell and seriously complex. Listen to these guys churning out ridiculous torrents of molten riffs on "Entrails of You" (lyrics are not for the weak though), a song that will easily appeal to fans of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Nile.

It might not be quite on par with their classic Pierced From Within, but Suffocation is a damn fine death metal record from one of the pioneers of the genre, showing that they are still a band to be reckoned with.

Suffocation: Suffocation

My Score:

This release is a mixture of old and new. The drums and vocals are recorded in a modern fashion, while the bass and guitar have an almost "unproduced" sound. Also, notice the old logo embossed on the sticker with the new design on the very cool cover. It is very evident from these aforementioned clues that the band had plenty of discussion about what exactly is the mission of this band. This is a strong release from Suffocation in terms of songs. It doesn't take long for the grooves and melodies to start sinking in and they are played with immense technical precision and force. What makes this cd so cool is that the band breaks up the tempos and is not constantly "blasting" you to death; rather, it kind of mauls you apart! It is clear from the "subtle" Slayer influenced intro that something is a little "off" or "not quite right" in the mentality of the narrations. Hey, you can't beat a little atmosphere and it could be taken a step further in the future. The only thing that could have been better on this release is the solos. On the last release they were a little more thought out and interesting, but make no mistake this cd is much better than the last. *I wish this one would have come with a bonus dvd. I would have surely spent the extra cash watching these guys in the studio.* One of the best of 2006 for sure!!!!!!!!!!
