Los Burbanks: Snake

The Mexican/American trio with a lead singer named German (last name: Briseno) takes its classic rock, punk, prog and Latin influences and knots them into a tight brand of indie rock that really rocks. Snake is Los Burbanks' full-length debut, and it finds Briseno singing in both English and Spanish as he seeks advice from a lizard on "Iguana," vents his spleen on the unexpectedly fun and melodic "Mödérföker" and reaches for Green Day grandeur on "Odd Little Nightmare" and "Cain Remains Still." While Briseno's potent voice keeps Los Burbanks in business, Jay Smith's chunky guitar riffs and screaming solos help maintain Snake's intensity.

Co-produced by Michael Barbiero (Guns N' Roses, Metallica), Snake bites with an energy that's infectious. It's clear Briseno — who moved to Seattle from Mexico City at age 19 and saw his family only twice during the ensuing decade — is intent on making his rock 'n' roll dreams come true. Snake proves he and his band are off to a good start.

Los Burbanks: Snake

My Score:

Los Burbanks play an energetic form of Latin based rock, big on crunchy yet funky guitar riffs and strong vocals sung in both English and Spanish. The band is comprised of German Briseno on bass/vocals, Jay Smith on guitars, and Ben Grieshaber on drums. Produced, engineered, and mixed by the both Michael Barbiero and Rob Grenoble, Snake is a great sounding disc, and the fact that some of the songs are sung in Spanish rescues this from being just another in a long line of catchy yet bland alternative pop rock records. Sure, there's some inspired guitar playing from Smith here, and it's no secret after listening to this album that he probably grew up on the sounds of classic rock guitarists like Page, Hendrix, Clapton, as well as more modern players like Thayill, Frustiante, Hetfield, Navarro, and the boys from Sepultura. His beefy tone and occasional solo flights are the perfect foil for Briseno's articulate and melodic vocals. Songs like "Iguana", "Straight Line", and "Adiccion" are just catchy enough to have alternative rock radio potential, and the more hard rock metal pieces like "Locusts" and "Big Sur" are just raucous enough to appeal to these liking things a little louder and heavier.

If I were Los Burbanks, I'd keep this formula going, as there's a huge Spanish speaking population here in the US, many of which I'm sure get into heavier music. Snake would surely appeal to that crowd, but also those listeners who like catchy contemporary hard rock with good grooves and memorable melodies.

My Score:

these guys need to decide whether they are going to be a latin or english singing band . i believe this formula is a big set-up for failure. a lot of work needs to be done to be "marketable". i would not waste any time or money on this... ruckus. this is just spanish jibberish. don't waste your time or money on this cd.
