The DVD age has led to the unearthing of valuable concerts and documentaries captured on film and then buried. Rainbow's recently released Live In Munich 1977 comes to mind. Considerably less relevant is Tony Palmer's 54-minute film called Ginger Baker In Africa — released with no extras and little historical context. In late 1971, Cream drummer Ginger Baker and filmmaker Tony Palmer set off in a beat-up Range Rover to journey south across the Sahara Desert to set up a recording studio in Lagos, then the capital city of Nigeria. While the film contains extended segments devoted to unrehearsed yet captivating percussion-filled jams (recorded in mono!) with lots of sexy African dancing, it's also addled with Baker's stoned and scratchy narration over home-movie style images. Although intended as a travel documentary, the film appears to have no direction, and the quest to open the studio in Lagos is barely a subplot — even though Paul McCartney and Wings later recorded Band on the Run there. One for hardcore Baker fans only.
