Misty Roses is the duo of London based DJ/multi-instrumentalist Jonny Perl and New York singer Robert Conroy. Together, along with some guests, the two have put together the mini-EP/LP Monster Zero, a bizarre mix of sci-fi themes with ambient, electronic, and 60's psychedelic pop sounds. Like a long lost track from a collaboration between David Bowie, Robert Fripp, and Brian Eno comes the title song "Monster Zero", with Conroy's hypnotic vocals supported by plenty of blipps and beeps from Perl as well as guest synthesizer from Stephen Wright. "Sleeping Beauty" is a creepy piece, with droning instrumentation and theramin vocals from Andrea Vaughn, and they get downright funky on the song "Villainess". The band almost sounds like a morbid U2 on the mostly acoustic "New World", a tune that mixes lush guitar with synths, and features a chilling vocal from Conroy. Much of the rest of this short CD is comprised of various trip hop and avant-garde variations on the title track, so while you do get some interesting themes and ideas here, I think we won't know the full extent of what Misty Roses has to offer until a full release of some of what they hint at here on Monster Zero is presented.
