Acclaimed session guitarist Michael Landau is now throwing his hat into the "live guitar hero extravaganza" release party also recently ventured into by Frank Marino and Mike Keneally. Michael Landau Group Live is a strong 2CD set, recorded at various gigs at The Baked Potato in California between January 2004 and January 2006 with various line-ups. Stellar players like bassist Jimmy Johnson, keyboard player Scott Kinsey, drummer Gary Novak, among others are present here alongside the "jack of all trades" guitar work of Landau, who can practically do it all.
CD 1 is the scorcher of the two, six songs of blistering blues rock featuring no shortage of white hot solos from Landau. Tunes like "Worried Life Blues", "Born in the Rain", and "The Sun" are beefy rockers dripping with fiery blues swagger and a drop of exploratory fusion vibe. With his trusty Gibson SG, Michael rips into one searing and emotional passage after another, invoking images of Beck, Hendrix, Marino, Trower, and Stevie Ray. On the second disc you get even longer tunes, more in a jazz and fusion setting, with songs like "Widow" and "Johnny Swing" being the highlights, as Landau goes into long journeys of jazz and psychedelic noodling that is always tasty and melodic.
If you have ever wondered what it would it be like to hear this talented guitar player really stretch out and do some jamming, look no further than Live, sure to be one of 2006's memorable guitar oriented albums.
