Blackmore's Night: Winter Carols
Ritchie Blackmore and the swashbuckling cohorts in Blackmore's Night are set to warm up your heart with their latest release, a holiday collection titled Winter Carols. With the edearing and lovely vocals of Blackmore's wife Candice Night leading the charge, the band runs through twelve tracks sure to bring holiday cheer to the listener. What's nice here is that the renaissance & acoustic flavors that Blackmore's Night normally bring to the table are permeated throughout these traditional and rare holiday favorites, giving this album a different flair than some of the other seasonal CD's that might be in your collection. With violin, accordion, percussion, keyboards, and Blackmore's acoustic & occasional electric guitar work, the songs are lush and flowing, and Candice's vocals just soar over the top, pulling the listener in deep. Check out her dreamy voice just begging you to take part in the arrangements on "Wish You Were Here" while Blackmore's classically inspired electric guitar solos bubble and weave throughout the mix. Traditional favorites like "Hark The Herald Angels Sing / Come All Ye Faithful", "We Three Kings", "Christmas Eve", and "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" are just lovely with this added minstrel/renaissance element added, and "Emmanuel" is lush and hypnotic, featuring great acoustic work from Blackmore.
So get ready to enjoy a joyous holiday season, and bring Winter Carols along with you to help spread the good cheer!

Blackmore's Night: Winter Carols Posted by Keith Hannaleck, SoT Staff Writer on 2007-01-09 20:24:18 My Score:
Blackmore's Night has struck gold once again with Winter Carols. Candace Night and Ritchie Blackmore and their troupe make beautiful music together. One of their niches is the old-fashioned traditional carols and some of their own nifty originals like "Winter (Basse Dance)" and "Christmas Eve" make this recording a very special holiday treat this year.
The renaissance sound is all part of the Blackmore's Rainbow repertoire and Candace Night has the perfect high angelic voice to accompany Blackmore's folk and electric (although seldom) guitar journeys.
I feel in love with the music of Blackmore's Night all the way back to their first album and now this holiday gift just melted my heart and made me feel all warm and spiritual. I know it may sound all squishy and fluffy but it is true. This is one the best Christmas albums I have ever heard and it will remain one of my yearly favorites for years to come.
This particular promo copy gave me offerings of "Christmas Eve" the radio edit version and full version along with the full version of "Wish You Were Here," which is also part of the main album's sequence. I also received a promo copy for the album including four tracks and the video version of "Christmas Eve," which is as enchanting as the song itself.
This one is a real keeper so get it.

Blackmore's Night: Winter Carols Posted by Ken Pierce, SoT Staff Writer on 2006-12-11 06:42:32 My Score:
Ritchie Blackmore is now firm and focused on Renaissance and Medieval music and together with his wife, the lovely Candice Night and their merry band of minstrels, brings you a Holiday album unlike any other. Winter Carols is an album that takes a number of the classic Christmas standards and blends their basics and warm melodies with their Renaissance flair. The beautiful voice of Candice is complimented by Blackmore's guitar work along with the flutes, horns, and bagpipes that are often used to majestic success and make songs like "Lord Of the Dance/Simple Gifts" one of the most powerful numbers on the release. Other standout numbers were "I Saw Three Ships" and "Good King Wenceslas" as they hold such a spirited feel and seem a perfect fit under this setting. There are some slower, more vocal and acoustic guitar based numbers like "Ding Dong Merrily On High" and of course the straight guitar instrumentals "Winter" and together the whole album brings an overall warmth on a cold and blustery day. This charming recording is just perfect for those holiday occasions with friends and family as you gather in front of a warm fire and revisit good times of the past while raising your glass to the future. It is different from that which you will experience in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but on the whole is a truly enjoyable piece of music that works best for the season.

Blackmore's Night: Winter Carols Posted by Paul Berthelot on 2007-06-22 11:14:48 My Score:
Bravsima to Ritchie, Candice & their merrie minstrels! A virtuoso performance! "Winter Carols" proves (as does their music) that there is a beautiful wonderment in the mellow & quiet tradition that is typical of Mediaeval & Renaissance music & troubadors. Thanks to Blackmore's Night for the romance, beauty, tranquility & pleasure that is inherent in all your music.
