Twisted Sister: A Twisted Christmas

When the Holiday Season is upon us we all sit back and think of good times with loved ones, good food and of course – Twisted F'n Sister!!! I have to admit that I never expected a Christmas themed album by Dee and the boys but as wild as the idea sounds there are some really good moments to be found on the CD. Opening up with a mellow very non-TS "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", the band soon gets down to the Hard Rock business they excel at with Dee growling intensely making the once sedate track a shock rocker. Winners are found in "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as the lovely Lita Ford has a duet guest spot and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is about as close to the originals but with a hard rock backbeat pushing them forward. "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" sounds very close to "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "Let It Snow" has a truly Black Sabbath vibe going on. ACDC's style comes to visit like a Ghost Of Christmas Past on "Silver Bells" which lead you to believe that Santa is wearing a bullet belt and a leather jacket this year while Rudolph's nose is extra red on account of all the head-banging. Dee, Eddie, J.J., A.J. and Mark give some tight and clever playing on the album and it is totally aimed at those listeners who want a little more Metal in their holiday tunes. They just might be onto something for if Savatage riffs worked for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra the same can be thought to help those Sister chords. It's more tongue in cheek than the TSO is that's for sure and I don't think Mr. O'Neill has to worry about his franchise with this one on the shelves at the same time.

Twisted Sister: A Twisted Christmas

My Score:

Leave it to Twisted Sister to put out a fun, and surprisingly very heavy, collection of Christmas classics done up metal style. I'll be the first to admit that this band ceased to matter long ago, but A Twisted Christmas features ten holiday favorites, all accentuated with dashes of heavy metal humor from Dee Snider and the boys, making it quite the laugh along riot as well as the pefect occasion to sip your spiked eggnog, holiday ale, and headbang along to. "Heavy Metal Christmas" is reason enough to pick up this thing, as TS inject their own lyrics into the staple "The Twelve Days of Christmas", the end result being simply hilarious. Other highlights include the duet with Lita Ford (where's she been hiding all these years?) on "I'll Be Home For Christmas", the riff roaring "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", and the wintery speed metal classic "Let It Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow". Most of the arrangements borrow from actual TS songs, so if you listen to this and feel that a lot of the music sounds familiar, that was done on purpose. Biggest revelation here is the super heavy guitar riffage from Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda-power chords are super crunchy throughout, as the band sounds heavier then they have in years. And Dee, well, he's Dee, seemingly having a blast putting his spin on these songs.

"On my heavy metal christmas, my true love gave to me, 7 leather jackets, 6 cans of hairspray, 5 skull n ring, 4 quarts of Jack,3 studded belts, ..." now that sounds like a metal christmas to me!
