Cranebuilders: Sometimes You Hear Through Someone Else

The debut from the UK band Cranebuilders, titled Sometimes You Hear Through Someone Else is a somber and moody affair that bears similarities to acts such as Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, The Verve, Cowboy Junkies, The Smiths, and The Church. As far as this being their first full length CD, the band has also included eight songs here from various EP's, making this a jam packed first official release. For a first record, the band sounds awfully melancholic, rarely getting past second gear, as they seem stuck in acoustic depair for much of the CD. Occasionally, on songs such as "Public Space" , "So What Could I Do", and "Soap Opera Rant", the band steps out of the box and rock a little, the latter a quirky tune with jangly guitar licks, spicy organ, and uptempo rhythms. The Lou Reed styled vocals get a tad monotonous after a while, and although there are some catchy hooks here and there, many of the songs have a depressing slant to them that is hard to get past, and the sparse, mostly acoustic instrumentation doesn't help matters. Cranebuilders seem to have some of the tools, but their brand of UK pop needs to show some more life if they are going compete with the thousands of other bands toiling on the scene.
