Despite its somewhat dodgy production and short running time, Light, the third EP from Italy's Last Souls, reeks of promise and shows a band that touches upon many styles but yet remains hard to classify. The opening title track is mostly an eclectic mix of avant-garde and prog rock, but also contains moments of furious black metal. Raging guitar riffs, powerful drum work, and evil black metal screams permeate the full-on metal attack of "Forgotten Screams", a song that has much in common with bands like Immortal and Dissection. However, things drop back into prog rock waters on "Meltin' Snow", featuring lush guitar strums, flute, orchestral keyboards, and moody guitar melodies dripping with melancholy. The closing mini-epic "When the Hope Falls" combines death and black metal elements, but overall has a more straightforward classic metal feel, complete with crushing riffs, growling vocals, and a smattering of moody atmosphere.
Overall Light shows some serious promise for this Italian metal band, as their strange mix of progressive, avant-garde, and black metal styles seems well suited for a label like The End Records, home to such varied bands like Agalloch, unexpecT, Giant Squid, and the like. All Last Souls need is a full-length release with some top-notch production and they might be ready to make a serious dent in the market.
