Chaosfear: One Step Behind Anger

The resurgence of thrash metal has been pleasing to my ears. Earlier this year I reviewed the Brazilian thrash metal album from Scars, and now another Brazilian thrash metal band has crossed my path with Chaosfear's second album One Step Behind Anger. Chaosfear is much heavier than Scars, and verges on death, including the harsh vocals.

Not too long ago I was talking with a thrash guitarist about the lack of new thrash. I had to figure that one of the challenges of being a new thrash metal band is to somehow sound different from all of the other thrash metal bands that came before you. Especially now with older thrash metal bands touring and making albums again it raises a question of how much room there is for newer, unproven bands.

But with Chaosfear I didn't feel like I was just being spoon fed leftovers. It's not the most original album, but at the same time I felt like these guys truly had a passion for what they are doing and they were able to put together eight solid songs. Musically, this band is very capable. Fernando Boccomino (vocals/guitar) lays down quality riffs, Anderson de Franca supports well on bass, and Danilo de Freitas adds some excellent drumming. There is not much solo work on this album, but some songs have it, and when it's there you definitely take notice. That said, "Driven by Hate" is my favorite song on this album. The drumming on this song is superb, and the riff is creative and memorable,.

The last song, "Detestation Inc.", has lyrics that leave me overjoyed. "Hear the speech that makes blood spill/ Far away from truth, there is nothing new/ Thoughts turning from nothing to emptiness/ The garden of freedom is now your cage." These aren't posers. They are metal. I highly recommend this album for thrash and death metal fans alike, and if you only buy five albums in the genre this year you should consider One Step Behind Anger.
