Here’s where the editor gives one of his staff a nice plug. Big Wedge is the brainchild of Sea of Tranquility staff writer Steve Fleck, and he’s put together a solid cast of musicians who have helped him create a melodic mix of hard rock, pop, and good-old fashioned classic rock.
The first track “Long Gone” has a bouncy southern twang to it, including a very addicting, radio friendly chorus. Fleck, who sings lead vocals on this one, tosses in some Mark Knopfler influenced guitar fills at the outset, before kicking it into overdrive for a nasty hard rock solo. The lyrics deal with one's battle to maintain some sort of independence in a relationship, and the outcome when that feeling takes over. On “When I Tell You Goodbye” the band kicks it into high gear with the muscular guitars of Fleck and Michael Jos and the strong, bluesy vocals of Ricky Woods. Again, melody is the key here, and it’s nice to hear a ballsy hard rock tune these days that you can actually sing along to. A hint of Dave Matthews is evident on the upbeat “Outta My Head”, with Woods once again proving his mettle with some husky vocals. The rhythm section of Chris Appel on bass and Kevin Distel on drums provide some fiery fury on this one, and the added backing vocals of Fleck and Jack Toledano gives this tune a real anthem-like feel. ”Corporate Rebels” has some nice acoustic guitars that give way to metal crunch, as the lyrics deal with the common man’s struggles against the system. Toss in a tasty guitar solo from Fleck and you have a great finisher to this 4 song EP.
