Quill, The: In Triumph

Sweden's The Quill offer up a great piece of Hard Rock with their fifth release, In Triumph. Now in this day in age when you here that a band is from Sweden, the first thing you expect is for the band to be progressive and heavy like the likes of the mighty Meshuggah or Soilwork, but this is not the case with The Quill. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT record. Steeped in much that made the '70's Hard Rock so great, good songs, melody, and a singer with a great voice, The Quill are a winner of a band. Let's take a look at In Triumph.

Opening track, "Keep The Circle Whole" sets the table for what is to be served up. Singer Magnus Ekwall is very expressive and has a lot of soul, which works well with the simple formula that The Quill's songs are based upon. Keep 'em short, simple and to the point. Imagine a Soundgarden era Chris Cornell and you're on the right track!

The production duties were handled by Tommy Newton (Helloween) and is tight and punchy. In Triumph has a great mix which allows the drums to really drive the hook laden, guitar riffy tunes. Newton adds a great dynamic to the epic, eastern sounding "Black", which is a highlight track. Also check out "Slave/Master", "Broken Man" and the aforementioned, "Keep The Circle Whole". Mostly mid paced rockers, but they do mix it up here and there.

In Triumph is a combination of a '70's Aerosmith record mixed with an '90's Soundgarden, Alice In Chains or even XYZ record. Good songs, good production and great individual performances all around. There isn't much to not to like with this record. The Quill continues to keep writing good Hard Rock material and In Triumph is no different. If you like your Hard Rock with a bit of diversity and can appreciate a band not just giving the listener the same song 10 times on a record, then you will like In Triumph.
