Paradise Lost: Paradise Lost

England's Paradise Lost have long been one of the leaders of the UK melodic doom metal scene, releasing a score of highly influential albums over the years that include Gothic and Draconian Times. The band veered off into pop & electronic styles throughout much of the late 90's, a move that disappointed many longtime fans, but thankfully they have returned a bit to some of their heavier sounds with their self-titled gem Paradise Lost. While much of their death metal elements are gone at this point, Paradise Lost is chock full of gothic imagery, crushing guitar riffs, ethereal keyboards, and mysterious yet melodic vocals. Melodies are key here, both from a musical and vocal standpoint, which one only need listen to the wonderful "Red Shift" to see what I mean, a song driven by Nick Holmes' passionate voice, the irresistible lead guitar work of Greg Mackintosh, and the chugging riffs of Aaron Aedy. Not as out and out doomy as My Dying Bride, and not quite as gothic (but close) as Finland's H.I.M., Paradise Lost bridge the gap somewhat here, delivering no shortage of compelling music. Other highlights include "Close Your Eyes", the catchy "Forever After" (great keyboards on this one), the sledgehammer riffage of "Sun Fading", and the soaring harmonies of "All You Leave Behind".

If you've never taken the leap into the world of Paradise Lost, this self-titled release might be a good place to start. Taking some of the ambience of their death & heavy doom metal past, plus the melodic nature of their more experimental later work, Paradise Lost is an enjoyable gothic metal album from start to finish.
