Coenen, Marcel: A Live Time Journey (DVD)
Phew, now this is a live performance! Guitar phenom, Marcel Coenen (Sun Caged) should have called this new live DVD, "With a Little Help From My Friends". This show recorded in January 2006 in The Netherlands features 14, count 'em 14, different musicians and vocalists. Touring behind the strength of his latest solo CD, Colour Journey Marcel Coenen employed the various musicians who had guest appearances on the CD to play their parts live for this show. This is something that I have never seen before and it is amazing to see all of the different players come and go on stage to play their various roles within the different songs. A very interesting concept, to say the least.
Coenen and friends rip through the entire Colour Journey CD, as well as a couple of songs from his first solo record, Guitartalk. For anyone that has yet to check out the Marcel Coenen guitar experience, then this DVD is a must. Coenen delivers his progressive technical brand of metal fused with off timed fusion and funk time signatures to new heights in this live setting. Being able to hear the notes rain down over you is one thing, but to be able to witness the virtuosity of Coenen, along with fellow live guitarist Frank Schiphorst (Symmetry) is astounding. They run through harmonized guitar runs together at a frightening pace that would leave even Mr. Vai and Mr. Satriani smiling with approval.
As with any good DVD packaging, Marcel Coenen's A LiveTime Journey is packed with extra features. Check out the bonus live cover versions of Alice In Chains' "Rooster" and the John Sykes guitar pyrotechnic/Whitesnake classic "Still Of The Night". Also look for the "Hidden" bonus guitar solo, a photo gallery, biography and more.
Marcel Coenen delivers the goods with this release. The staging is both basic and minimal, no theatrics here. Shot in front of an intimate audience in The Netherlands, Coenen weaves his way around, through, over and underneath the guitar. The sonic quality of the record is punchy and powerful. The mix is amazing. Coenen possesses a terrific guitar tone on record and it transfers great into this live setting. Performances from everyone involved are top notch and awe inspiring. Grab this DVD.
If you are a guitar player, you will love this stuff. It will inspire you to play or maybe even make you never touch it again! God, can this guy play! I'm off to go a practice my guitar right now.

Coenen, Marcel: A Live Time Journey (DVD) Posted by Alexis on 2006-12-27 08:30:36 My Score:
Great performance by Marcel and his "band". The only thing I don't like about the DVD is the excessive amount of slow-mo or half-time filming that was done of Marcel playing. It would have been much better if you could just see him play full speed all the time. Still, an excellent DVD.
