MegetMeget is the two-man project of Danish drummer Kalle Mathiesen (Kalles World Tour) and Norwegian tuba virtuoso Lars Andreas Haug. Those familiar with the work of Mathiesen should instantly take to MegetMeget, a mostly instrumental release molded after 70's Frank Zappa as well as the Canterbury scene. Featuring Kalle's insanely busy drumming technique and Haug's husky tuba melodies (the two also throw in some bass, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, and some vocals), these tracks breathe with plenty of life and gusto. At times the pieces are frantic, like on "Night Vision", and at others majestic, with a hint of jazz and prog rock, as on "Without Her Mask". Hearing Mathiesen's drums really cooking alongside the beefy tuba waves of Haug on "Bardommens Demens" brings to mind 60's jazz, even more so when they throw in some scat vocals. The title track is speedy and complex prog, with Mathiesen's tricky snare & cymbal work providing the framework for Haug's gargantuan tuba melodies and proggy synth noodlings to take flight, while "Goddag" is a warped vocal piece that is part psychedelia and part funk.
This odd recording from Mathiesen & Haug certainly won't be for everyone, but if you have an open mind and can appreciate something different featuring a wide variety of styles and some virtuoso playing, MegetMeget just might tickle your fancy.
