Box, Edward: Moonfudge
While the name Edward Box might be a new one for most of us, he offers up a familiar sounding record with the release of his instrumental CD, Moonfudge. Hailing from Cumbria and now living in the Newcastle, England area, Edward Box delivers a record that is very reminiscent of guitar heroes George Lynch and Joe Satriani. Not a bad combo of guitar greats, but nothing very much new here.
Moonfudge opens with the George Lynch flavored, "Jack in the Box". A scorcher of a track that is very much vintage Dokken era Lynch, with all of the great legato licks that are totally a nod to the great tiger striped guitar shredder. Other highlights include the Satriani like "Welcome to the Grindhouse".
Edward Box has a great feel to his playing. While a lot of what he does is very familiar, given his guitar heroes (Schenker, Lynch, Satriani, Vai) he still retains some sort of his own personality to his playing. Box does have a nice guitar tone, and his phrasing is good. Perhaps that he is a popular guitar teacher in Newcastle might serve up his close resemblance to the already mentioned guitar heroes. Having to teach people the techniques of other people can have that result, however Box is a very competent player.
Moonfudge is an OK CD, just nothing groundbreaking or anything that you haven't heard before.
