L'Engoulevent: L'île où vivent les loups / étoifilan

L'Engoulevent was the brain child of ex-Karrik member Michel McLean (guitar/vocals) along with Pierre Moreau (piano) and what began as a solo project for Mclean soon expanded to include members François Turcotte (violin), Russel Gagnon (cello) and Paul Picard from Maneige (percussion) for the one and only album from L'Engoulevent. While McLean recorded previously in a more traditional folk style with his former partner Claude Lafrance in Les Karrik, the sound of his new band, while retaining a strong folk base, would now incorporate classical influences as well from Moreau's own musical background. While many of the tracks are sparse as far as instrumentation goes, the music is anything but simple. The unique blending of McLean and Moreau's styles created a very rich and satisfying end result. A second album was recorded but never released and while this may have been the end for L'Engoulevent proper, it would not be long before the two driving forces would work together again. Étoifilan which is included in the disc's final 8 tracks was the name of a childrens story book that Moreau and McLean were asked to compose the music for by the book's author Bertrand Gauthier in 1979. Given the nature of the material the songs are lighter and more playful both musically and lyrically but the duo rise to the task at hand and together they re-team up with many of the musicians that were involved in L'Engoulevent, including Turcotte and Gagnon. This once rare record now finds a new life on this re-issue and makes for a great addition.
