Nightwish meets Rammstein? Well, that's the first thing that comes to mind when listening to Satyrian's new EP The Dark Gift. The Finnish gothic metal band have chosen to follow-up Eternitas with this EP of remixes from TmV (The Shade Factory), The Dreamside, and Orkki, giving these songs from Eternitas a wild electronic flair, which surprisingly works well with the dark, gothic, and progressive metal arrangements that these songs originally had. The songs themselves mix up the gothic male vocals from Roman Schonsee with the ethereal female vocals of Kemi Vita and Judith "Ciara" Stuber, and they are surrounded by crunchy guitar riffs, bubbling layers of keyboards & electronics, please real and programmed drums. Highlight tracks include the almost techno/dance mix of 'The Dark Gift", the heavy "Invictus", the proggy dance-trance of 'Eternitas", and the mix of Middle Eastern sounds and techno beats on "No Tears, No Embrace". The band included both the remix and the Eternitas album version of "The Dark Gift" on the EP, so it's interesting to hear the contrast between the two. Overall, The Dark Gift is a fun listen if you already own the Eternitas CD, and I can see gothic prog and metal fans who might have significant others who don't appreciate their favorite art forms, but like techno and dance music, getting into this EP. Those new to the band start off with Eternitas first then check this out.
