Get a grip on the two-man line-up for this all-instrumental tour de force: Angra's Kiko Loureiro on acoustic and electric guitars, bass and keyboards and Axel Rudi Pell's Mike Terrana on drums. Plop Pink Cream 69's Dennis Ward into the production chair to oversee 13 songs of dazzling metal, Latin rhythms and jazz improv, and you'll have a soaring, layered album that lifts off the second you press "play." Hell, no wonder this thing is called No Gravity.
Loureiro plays fast. Really fast. But on his solo debut, he somehow manages to keep complex songs like "Enfermo," "Pau-de-Arara" and "Moment of Truth" clean and lean. His fluid style — and tendency to reveal his softer side with unaccompanied acoustic pieces — makes listening to No Gravity a pleasure. Terrana tones down his bombast when appropriate, and Ward makes everything glisten. Loureiro often gets a little repetitious in his songs, especially during "Endangered Species" and "Dilemma," but Angra does, too.
This is an infectious CD that made me want to get reacquainted with my Angra collection.
