Here's an oddball, multi-gender group: Nikki Puppet features female vocalist Nikki Gronewold and bassist Anke Sobek, plus Greek guitar hero Christos Mamalitsidis and drummer Michael Wolpers. Together they make abrasive yet melodic hard rock-slash-metal. The result is a rough and unlikely mix of Doro, Evanescence, Lita Ford and Pat Benatar. Looking like Patti Smith on the cover of Puppet On A String, Gronewold brings a sense of brashness ("Synchronized") and beauty ("Grumpy Face") to the proceedings. But at 33 minutes long, this album could have used a few more songs — and given Mamalitsidis a little more room to spread out. Nevertheless, thanks to distribution in the United States by Locomotive Records, Puppet On A String is a decent introduction to a band that's apparently generating some excitement in Europe.
