Multi-instrumentalist Duncan Patterson's previous projects — as a member of doom-metal frontrunners Anathema and later the atmospheric Antimatter — paved the way for Íon. Taking its name from the Gaelic word for "pure," Íon is essentially a one-man project with plenty of vocal input from female singers like Russia's Emily Saaen and Mexico's Marcela Bovio (Stream of Passion, Elfonía) and some outside assistance on classical instruments. Madre, Protégenos is a brief (39 minutes) and discreet listen, quiet but not quite peaceful, glistening with stunning acoustic guitars and occasional percussion, harp, strings and woodwinds — all wrapped in warm and dreamy vocals.
