Debbie Harry meets Natalie Merchant and Anneke van Giersbergen on the self-titled full-length debut from We Landed on the Moon! The Baton Rouge, La.-based quintet pushes a punkish yet dreamily progressive brand of indie rock that's anchored with the mesmerizing vocals of chanteuse Melissa Eccles. In fact, "Everything Is Fine" apes Blondie's "Dreaming" — right down to the snappy drumbeats and flourishes of synths. (Not that this is a bad thing.) Elsewhere, the songs on which the band succeed the most are the ones that adhere to some type of sensible structure: "Before the Lights Come Up," "One of a Kind," "Indian Song" and even "Mourning Dance" — on which Eccles gives us a glimpse of her aggressive side. Songs like those make the album sound warmer and more charming with each listen. On the other hand, airy tracks like "Simple Steps," "Lovely" and "Without A Sound" keep We Landed on the Moon! lost in space.
