Alabama Thunderpussy: Open Fire

I tend to like this kind of stuff from time to time as it's pure and back to basics Hard Rock – and if you lean to that side yourself you will find it to be the top-shelf liquor of Hard Rock & Roll. Open Fire presents us with ATP's return and also with a new singer in their roster. Vocalist Kyle Thomas has a swagger and growl that brings to mind more of the heavy Southern Rock bands of days past, and there are some moments on this recording that made me think of the mighty Molly Hatchet. When you start to play this CD and "The Cleansing" begins with its almost Motley Crue "Red Hot" drumming, I dare you to not kick one back with the stereo blasting while the band kicks into gear. It's primarily a Metal album, but some of the tunes like "None Shall Return" and "Whisky War" have that rumbling groove that you often find in bands like Artimus Piledriver. This vibe gives the sound a level of brash and ornery attitude that separates it from the Power and Melodic Metal providers of today. The guy's show that they are capable of being heavy as Hell with the title track and also that they are not aiming to be Progressive at all. Instead they prove that they are more interested in getting their hands dirty for the cause. Thomas joins the rest of the guys that feature Erik Larson (guitar), Ryan Lake (guitar), Mikey B. (bass) and Bryan Cox (drums). I found a lot of promise on this release and feel their blending of Hard Rock/Metal elements along with the Stoner/Southern ones will offer a particular demographic something to enjoy very much. The fans of Southern Rock who long for something heavier will definitely appreciate this.
