"DAATH is a Hebrew word meaning knowledge, referring to a knowledge not regularly attained by ordinary masses. Primarily, our band is an exploration of the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life and or Death is part of a mystical belief spanning many cultures including the Egyptian, Sumerian, and Hebrew traditions. The tree is unique because it has a dual meaning. On the one hand it is the system that describes universal creation, but on the other hand it is a model for the mind of man. In this way man can be seen as the whole of the universe in miniature. Our primary use of the Tree of Life is psychological. We feel that since the tree of life mimics the human mind as closely as it does that it is an excellent system for artistic expression."
So is the explanation given by the band Daath on their name and musical outlook on things. Say what you will, but it is original. As for their music, this is pretty exciting stuff all around, and the band are certain to raise many eyebrows when The Hinderers hits the streets. Arch Enemy styled melodic death metal with an ethereal keyboard aura found in many black metal bands is a good way to describe the music of Daath, and while we are at it throw in plenty of virtuoso guitar work and satisfying vocal growls and you have a very enticing debut on Roadrunner Records. Produced by former Death/Testament/Obituary/Disincarnate guitarist James Murphy (and co-engineered and mixed by Andy Sneap and Colin Richardson), The Hinderers is a rock solid extreme metal album with balls and intellect. These lads from Georgia really know how to combine the best of US & European metal, evident in tunes like "Ovum" and "Subterfuge", while barnburners such as "Festival Mass Soulform" and "From the Blind" contain killer thrash guitar riffs and plenty of keyboard textures to go along with some very effective growling vocals. The mixture of cold symphonic black metal ambiance and shredding death metal brutality is all over pieces like "Who Will Take The Blame?" and "War Born (Tri-adverserenade)", as the band showcases their commanding musical abilities.
Roadrunner Records has quite a find on their hands with Daath. With killer guitar work, brilliant drumming, chunky grooves, perfectly executed vocals, a healthy dose of keyboards, and crushing songs, The Hinderers is sure to be talked about as one of the most impressive label debuts here in 2007. Alongside Beneath the Massacre's debut for Prosthetic Records, we have two of the hottest extreme metal albums of the year, and it's only March!
