McIntosh, Jimmy: Orleans to London
Gritty blues, hard rock, jazz, and funk are all the rage on this varied and star packed set from Las Vegas guitarist Jimmy McIntosh. The axe-slinger has played with many named acts over the years (Sheena Easton, Penn and Teller, Drew Carey, to name a few), and Orleans to London is his debut CD. His influences, ranging from Scott Henderson, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Ron Wood, Keith Richards, and Jimi Hendrix, can be heard throughout this release, and he's surrounded himself with a stellar supporting cast to help out his cause. Ivan Neville's swirling organ adds a tasty treat to the fiery blues-rock riffs of "Biker Baby" and the charged up funk of "Mama Funk". On "G-Spot", McIntosh is joined by none other than Ronnie Wood on baritone guitar and "Hot Rod" on lead guitar, the latter happens to be legendary guitarist Jeff Beck. With Ivan's sassy organ, Cyril Neville's busy percussion work, and the tight rhythm section of drummer Willie Green and bassist Rochon Westmoreland, this tune is a real scorching mix of rock, blues, funk, and reggae. Other hot tracks include the tender blues of "Woody", the intense rave-up "A.K.A. Papa Funk" (with McIntosh adding some scorching solos on this one), the jazzy blues of "Fifty Five" (a clear nod to Scofield, with some wild wah-wah leads), and the somber blues of "Rogent", with McIntosh, Wood, and Beck all collaborating. The CD ends with a searing version of the Jimi Hendrix classic "Third Stone From the Sun", again showing Jimmy's solid chops as well as plenty of emotion.
If you dig modern day blues rock, you can't go wrong with Orleans to London. My guess is Jimmy McIntosh has arrived and is here to stay.

McIntosh, Jimmy: Orleans to London Posted by Rob Barber, Australia on 2008-02-19 00:24:11 My Score:
Just received my copy from Jimmy and I'm very pleased indeed. Being a guitarist I'm always on the lookout for inspiration and it's here in spades!
Even without the "stellar" cast of Ronnie Wood and Jeff Beck (who are these guys anyway?...ha ha), the album would have been a winner. Nice tight rhythm section playing beautifully in the pocket, interesting compositions, nicely paced and some wonderfully fluid guitar lines from Jimmy creates an album of good time listening. With the Nevilles in place shades of The Meters and Leo Nocentelli abound. Real music by real players. I particularly like the jazz inflections interspersing the funk and always makes for interesting listening. Oh, and Jeff was playing as sweetly as ever.
In a world increasingly subjected to the garbage of Instant Pop Idols (just add water...) it is gratifying to hear light and shade and thought provoking structure.
A highly enjoyable release - go Jimmy!
