Koldborn: The Uncanny Valley

From Denmark come Koldborn, a band that plays brutal death metal, plain and simple. Making no bones about hiding their influences (Hate Eternal, Zyklon, Amon Amarth, Vader, and Behemoth to name a few) these guys plow ahead with a dozen barrel-chested tracks of brutality, crackling with pummeling guitar riffs, evil vocal growls, and rampaging rhythms. There's no subtlety, not much in the way of melody, and unfortunately not much originality either. A song like "Below a Crushign Earth" sounds eerily like vintage Vader, but the vocals of Lars Bjorn Hansen fall a bit off the mark. Production wise, this is some good sounding stuff, heavy as hell (you'll blast the roof off the house on murderous tracks like "Last Message", "Repression", and "Relativity"), and expertly played. In fact, for most, this will be one of the most punishing and brutal death metal albums of the year. For some though, this writer included, there's just not enough here that's breaking any new ground, which ultimately holds The Uncanny Valley back just a little.

Koldborn: The Uncanny Valley

My Score:

With all the really good metal that seems to continually come from Scandinavian countries like Sweden, Norway, and Finland, it's nice to hear something really good coming from Denmark for a change. Here on their second full length release, and first with singer Lars Hansen, Kolborn really take it to the next level with their own style of brutal death metal with that signature Kolborn groove. Standout tracks include "Below a Crushing Earth" and the title track. Very tight musically, the band goes from blast beats, to thrash like riffing, to slow power churning; seamlessly blending it all together. The songs are well written and well structured, delivering the goods without a whole lot of filler. This brings me to the length of the CD, which clocks in at just over 37 minutes. While some may feel they need "more for their money" so to speak, far too many bands try and make recordings with too much music, thinking that is what people want. Quantity doesn't always equal quality, which is what you have here. While it may not be groundbreaking, The Uncanny Valley gets to the point and says exactly what it's supposed to say, and does it well.
