Magic Bullets: A Child But In Life Yet a Doctor In Love

This debut from San Francisco sextet Magic Bullets is a listenable mix of new wave flair ala The Talking Heads or The Stranglers, lush British pop (Squeeze and The Beatles), some Radiohead influences, as well as post-punk along the lines of Gang of Four. With two guitarists hitting plenty of jangly and textures spots and a keyboard player swirling lots of wurlitzer & farfisa, these guys have a pretty rich sound musically over which Phil Benson lays down his charming vocals. Most of the songs have a catchy feel to them, never getting overly adventurous ("Lay Low" does contain some interesting guitar bits and layers of backing vocals), which might prevent this from appealing to the prog rock or metal crowd, but if you like modern rock with lots of hooks and a nod to the Brit pop scene, these young guns from California should fit the bill.
