Chaos and brutality-two pretty good words to describe the music of Austin, Texas' Thumbscrew. Their new EP on Imagine It Records Within Hearts of Redemption is a non-stop barrage of sledgehammer riffery, relentless drum blasts, and screaming vocals. Certainly as rough and bombastic as Converge, Ed Gein, early Dillinger Escape Plan, or any of the many insane metalcore and grindcore bands on labels such as Metal Blade and Relapse Records, Thumbscrew steamroll through 5 tracks of absolute mayhem here that's practically over before you know it. Both "Maliscent" and "Be Prepared to Dig In" take hardcore and metal to the extreme, and the epic "A.I.M. Plays A Big Role In Her Life" has some great intricate riffs and brutal arrangements before it drifts off into minutes of dead silence (what a waste) to give way to the textured metal musings of "Title Song (A Little Black Heart)". Overall there's very little here to judge, but what little there is shows a hard working band that knows how to deliver extreme music that pulls no punches and goes straight for the juggular.
