Like brutal metalcore with a dash of melody thrown in for good measure? Then be sure to check out the debut from Texas' own She Killed Poetry. Shut Out the Silence is one heavy as hell release from these five upstarts from Dallas, as they throw in plenty of crushing guitar riffs that border on death metal at times, sick drum work, superhuman breakdowns, monstrous screams & growls, and even the occasional melodic vocal passage. The ten tracks here rampage by pretty quickly, like the bruising "Murderous Hands" or the lethal "Our Passing Moment", but it's the more melodic fare that really shows the versatility of this band. "Unable to Answer" is a moody and atmospheric rocker that shows that singer Chad Spears can do more than just growl and shout, and "We'll Never Dance Again" mixes in tons of catchy melodies amidst the metal thunder, and even includes a hot guitar solo. Images of Killswitch Engage abound on the killer "Shut Out the Silence", especially in the guitar department where Derek Troxell and Joe Riojas churn out some classic bone crunching riffs.
Shut Out the Silence is not going to break any records for originality, but if you like your metalcore as chaotic and brutal as possible, then give this debut from She Killed Poetry a listen. Fans of All That Remains, Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, and As I Lay Dying should eat this up.
