Taboo Voodoo: Something's Cookin'

Take drummer extraordinaire Mike Terrana (Axel Rudi Pell, Rage, Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine), French guitar phenom Cyril Achard and who-the-hell-is-he bassist Ivan Rougny, give them a catchy name like Taboo Voodoo and you've got a faster-than-thou instrumental power trio, right? Wrong.

Something's Cookin' ain't metal. In fact, it's similar to Terrana's first solo album, 2002's Shadows from the Past – a record more rooted in heavy rock-jazz fusion, complex yet tasteful. Each of the 10 songs here, every one written by Achard, is melodic and accessible without becoming overbearing. You get the distinct feeling that these guys are playing strictly because they love to play. Intriguing song titles include "Vertical Obsession," "Clandestine Soul" and "Cannibal Pursuit."

Achard proves himself yet again as one of the most capable rock guitarists and writers in the world, and Terrana further establishes himself as a versatile drummer worthy of comparison to – I never thought I'd say this — Mike Portnoy.

Cheers, dudes.
