From the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles comes Cerberus, a quintet that has managed to scrape the crusty black layer of metalcore from our memories and infuse the wretched and weary metal underground with something that recalls the unabashed brutality of vintage Bay Area thrash (Testament, Exodus) and yet never sacrifices a crunchy, crucifying contemporary metal riff for the sake of being retro. Yes, these kids have clearly listened to the core, they've clearly listened to the nü but they've done their
homework and it shows in tracks such as "Forced Choice" (When's the last time you heard a band go into full gallop in a song's final 30 seconds, then move to something more grindy, dirty, evil?) and "The Answer" (Melody? Hells yeah.) There's plenty of deep cuts to love here, including "The Filthy Few" and the smashing, thrashing epic "In Contempt," but it's not hard to come by exciting material on this most exciting and enticing of metal albums, one that'll make you want to forsake Internet access for a year while you scrawl your own handwritten 'zine with "Lifetimes to Come" or "The Legion" blaring in the background all the while. Truly amazing.
