Matadors: Flame the Whisper
Every now and again along comes a band that's not brilliant and yet doesn't take itself so seriously that its flaws can't be forgiven. Sweden's Matadors serves as a perfect example. Here, the Queens Of The Stone Age-cum-Hellacopters-cum-the not-so-bad bar band from somewhere in west Texas rocks the eff outta pieces such as "So You Judge Me From The Volume Of My Band" and "New Wave Coke" with the kind of vigor that
arena ready kids can't seem to muster no matter how large their egos, no matter how high the budgets, no matter how new their amps. Nothing here is going to set the world on fire (the band can barely write its way off a cocktail napkin) but sometimes that's kind
of the point. For fans of Cheeseburger, early KISS, Lions and the like.

Matadors: Flame the Whisper Posted by Ken Sanford, SoT Staff Writer on 2007-05-15 07:50:38 My Score:
Sweden isn't exactly known for its neo-stoner/neo-punk scene. But from somewhere in the depths of Stockholm comes Matadors. They cite as some of their influences, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Queens of the Stone Age, Clutch, and Devo, among others. Strange thing is, when listening to their new release Flame the Whisper, you get a taste of all that and more. The guys deserve some credit for doing something different rather than going down the same paths that everyone seems to be following these days. Matadors describe their sound as "a blend of dirty-tango twisted with some ol´country-twang in their robot´ roll." Their sound is slightly similar with early Queens of the Stone Age mixed with Urge Overkill. The sound is like stoner rock meets modern alternative. It's very hard to describe. The music is loose and rockin', unfortunately the sound gets old quickly on Flame the Whisper. Those first few tracks are a lot of fun, but with 16 tracks it's just too much to deal with at one time.
Matadors are original and definitely have their own sound, and are sure to find their niche somewhere.
