A Second From The Surface: The Streets Have Eyes
 Last week, while hanging out at my local VFW after
hours, I spilled some Miller High Life and damn if I
couldn't find a towel of any kind to wipe it up.
Seeing as how we book touring bands there now and
again so's we can pay the rent and the kids have some
place to down their Skittles and Heineken, I always
know there's some extra promo CDs around. I spotted
this little bastard while stumbling around in the dark
and wondered if this was the missing link twixt From A
Second Story Window and 30 Seconds To Mars. Turns out
it was the missing link between a mess-up and a
clean-up, for after listening but one track I
determined that the best fate for this one was to
spend its days as a beer coaster.

A Second From The Surface: The Streets Have Eyes

Minneapolis Minnesota's A Second From The Surface return with their latest release, The Streets Have Eyes on Dark Reign Recordings. These guys like to call themselves a grind/punk band and you really can't argue with that. From the opening track "King Cobra" the band shows their unique style by going seamlessly from blast beats to the one-two bass-snare punch of punk. Throughout the album A Second From The Surface blend these styles together perfectly, like that was how it was meant to be; all the while throwing in some nice melodic breakdowns that really flavor the music nicely. One issue is that only one song on The Streets Have Eyes reaches the two minute forty second mark. The rest of the songs barely hit two minutes. It's understandable that they're going for short blasts of audio brutality, but with the good songwriting ability the band is showing it would be nice if they extended some of the song sections a bit and extended the songs. Some parts are very well written and really get your attention. The problem is by the time you start getting into it, it's over; especially when they slow it down just a bit during the aforementioned melodic breakdowns.
A Second From The Surface is a good band, who write really good songs and appear to have some really good ideas. These guys are on to something here. The biggest problem with this new release The Streets Have Eyes is that it clocks in at barely twenty minutes total. Twenty measly minutes. The songs are a microcosm of the album, by the time you start to dig it, it's over. The quality is there, it would be nice if there was just a little more quantity.
