A band that's opened for everyone from Van Halen to Evanescence to The Who should finally move to headlining status -- at least at the club and small-theater level -- with Fear & Desire, an emotional and epic record that heavily borrows its melodrama from fellow Irishmen U2. MRNORTH's second album is a post-grunge concept record of sorts about the darker side of love and commitment. Colin Smith's moody vocals are perfect for this material, whether he's channeling Kurt Cobain on the Nirvana-like "The Player"? or hypnotizing listeners with the unorthodox melody lines of "For the Moment."? Lush instrumentation from the Greenwich Village Orchestra adds richness and poignancy to many of the 13 songs on Fear & Desire, making this rock record perfect for a late-evening chill session.
