Glenn Hughes might be billed as "the voice of rock", but I'm sure even Glenn wouldn't argue that Paul Rodgers is the "legend of rock". Live in Glasgow was recorded and filmed in October of 2006, the last date of his sold out UK tour, and sees the singer and his solid band cranking out classics from his time with Free, Bad Company, The Firm, and some solo material. Speaking of the band, Paul has along with him here Howard Leese (ex-Heart) and Kurtis Dengler on guitars, Lynn Sorensen on bass, and drummer Ryan Hoyle. They tear through smokin' versions of Free songs like "I'll Be Creepin' ", "The Stealer", "Wishing Well", "Fire and Water", "I'm a Mover", "The Hunter", and of course "All Right Now", which quite frankly all are reason enough to get this set. Though some of the Bad Company tunes have been played to death over the years (thanks to FM radio), "Bad Company" and "Can't Get Enough" are especially crunchy and inspired here, with Rodgers sounding as good vocally as he ever has. Fans of his blues releases will love the nasty "Louisiana Blues", featuring a snarling Rodgers and both Leese and Dengler firing off some heavy blues-rock licks. A tender rendition of the classic "Seagull" ends the set on a plaintive note, a nice way to fade out after quite a bit of heavy rockin' from the band.
This is one of those live albums that will surprise and please many. If you caught or listened to Paul Rodger's recent tour with Queen, you obviously knew that they guy still had the goods. Live in Glasgow firmly cements that notion. Hearing this legendary vocalist sing many of his best known classics, especially the killer Free songs, makes this set worth every penny. Recommended.
