After a critically acclaimed debut CD called Ellipsis— an instrumental song cycle reflecting loss and inner turmoil — Chicago's Aziola Cry returns with a 23-minute EP that marks the final chapter of Ellipsis. It also stands on its own as a riveting piece of lyrics-free music. Each of the three songs (just like the EP) is titled "Ghost Conversations" — perfect for this mysterious, slightly creepy-sounding trio of Chapman Stick, guitar and drums. "Ghost Conversations I" opens with a long ambient passage before subtle percussion gradually gives way to aggressive guitar riffs and a hard-rockin' groove that becomes startlingly relentless — leaving listeners wondering what's in store for the EP's remaining 15 minutes. "Ghost Conversations II" picks up right where "Ghost Conversations I" left off. This time, though Mike Milaniak's guitar is allowed to roam like a hungry spirit amidst more relentless chaos: heavy down-tuned power chords, funeral-procession drums and monstrous bass. The album reaches its apex with "Ghost Conversations III" — a nine-and-a-half-minute progressive-metal journey, during which all three players' instruments engage in a primal dance that will leave listeners wanting more. And isn't that what all good EPs should do?
