Susperia: Cut From Stone

After a big breakthrough with their 2004 release Unlimited, Norwegian thrashers Susperia come back stronger than ever with their new opus Cut From Stone. This new offering starts right where its predecessor left off as far as dishing out quality material. The opening track "More", with its double bass drumming, atmospheric vocals, and thrashing chorus lets you know that Susperia aren't resting on their laurels; they're back and they mean business. The band slows it down a tad for the next few tracks, sacrificing some speed, but without losing any power. This is one real good batch of metal songs. All the ingredients are there. Former Dimmu Borgir drummer Tjodalv is at the top of his game, while the guitar work of Cyrus and Elvorn really carries the album. What's a good metal album without great riffs and great solos? This album is full of them. On tunes like "Release", "Bound To Come", and the title track, these guys serve up some seriously heavy, memorable riffs. Not to be forgotten is vocalist Athera. His vocals are clean, but mean, as he shows off his immense vocal talent. With the vocals being another strong suit of the album, both Athera and the backing vocals are produced very well. The vocals are fantastic on every track.

This new album is slightly more melodic and tame compared to Unlimited, which may disappoint some Susperia fans, but let's be real, this is a good heavy metal album. While it is definitely thrash, it will certainly appeal to most metal fans, whether you're a fan of Testament, Judas Priest, Megedeth, whoever. If you like metal; thrash, power, or even prog, you'll surely dig Cut From Stone.
