Metallica meets Radiohead by way of Cheap Trick on the third album from Seattle's noisy and volatile Point One. The press release accompanying Unlucky Stars refers to "the band's alternately snotty and sincere disorder," and that about sums it up.
Whether these boys are shouting and making a senseless, slutty cacophony, as they do on the title track and "Monochrome Mistress," or engaging in some smart melody acrobatics – just listen to "Cruel," "Oxygen" and "Running Away" – Point One will leave a stain. "Bodies for Freedom" is the one song that most effectively combines both of the band's sonic approaches in a manic, head-spinning politically charged song that could be Point One's anthem.
There is not a lot of originality on display here; in fact, if you've listened to American radio stations at all during the past dozen years, you're bound to have heard it all before. But there is something about Point One that is charming and off-putting at the same time. That's gotta count for something.
