It's amazing to think there are still prog recordings from the 70's that have yet to see the light of day in terms of any official release. The last few years has seen many gems come to the attention of small independent CD labels and the result is that many of these 'lost" recordings are now here for us to enjoy. Aphelandra recorded this short but sweet album back in France in 1976. Those familiar with the band Clearlight might be interested in this recording, as a few of that bands members appear on this CD, and the sound is somewhat similar.
Mostly instrumental, Aphelandra mixed spacey prog, light jazz fusion, and classical music into one seamless sound. There are many solo spots for violin, guitar, sax, and various keyboards, including piano, synthesizer, organ and Mellotron. The piano work is quite beautiful, especially on the monumental epic "Airs", a song that fluctuates from melodic classical strains to searing jazz-rock fusion. The interplay between the musicians is quite harmonious at times, and approaches some of the more touching moments from the classic Mahavishnu Orchestra albums. That being said, those expecting an intense fusion rave-up might want to go elsewhere. While there are some fiery jams, this CD is more about atmosphere and beauty, much like the Clearlight albums. So if you happen to like the more laid back style of that band, there will be much here for you to enjoy.
