3 Inches Of Blood: Fire Up The Blades
It seems inevitable that someone would pick up the ball and start carving out some metal that strikes at the heart of the '80s. Sure, Chicago's Bible Of The Devil has done more for NWOBHM than even Iron Maiden has in recent years, but 3 Inches Of Blood gets down to business with an unapologetic mastery of the metal language, recalling Mercyful Fate, Slayer and even vintage Priest. Dig "Night Marauders," "Trial Of Champions" and "Demon's Blade" for examples of how real metal can and should be done. No compromise, no winks or nudges to "new" metal, nothing but the undeniable brutal truth. Death to false metal indeed!

3 Inches Of Blood: Fire Up The Blades Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2007-07-15 14:34:39 My Score:
Old school 80's thrash collides with modern black & death metal on the sophomore effort from Canada's 3 Inches of Blood. Fire Up the Blades, produced by Slipknot's Joey Jordison and mixed by Zeuss of Shadows Fall, is one fast moving shredder of an album, featuring dual vocalists, one who cranks up the Halford-ish high pitched wail and the other who delivers a sort of death/black/thrash scream or growl, depending on his mood. Ultimately though it's the kick ass guitar riffs that take this one up another notch, with two axe-riffers blasting out no shortage of molten, speedy thrash riffs and blistering, acrobatic leads. Try and stop from giving yourself whiplash on tunes like "Night Marauders", "The Goatriders Horde", and "Forest King", all three perfect examples of what thrash is all about. The band even settles on a wild Thin Lizzy-meets-early Metallica groove on the killer riff-monger "Trial of Champions", and there's great bottom end crunch to the 80's inspired "The Great Hall of Feasting".
So, if you're tired of all the metalcore bands who basically sound identical to each other, and need a break from death, black, or prog metal, take a trip down retro lane with the latest from 3 Inches of Blood. These guys have channeled mid-80's Bay Area thrash and late 70's/early 80's European NWOBHM quite well, mixing in some modern extreme styles, and have come up with a highly enjoyable slab of metal. Check it out.
