Pure, unadulterated Texas thrash is what you get on the full length debut CD from The Destro, called As the Coil Unwinds. This batch of youngsters do their best to channel the precision riffing of classic Pantera and the extreme aggression of Lamb of God into a pretty heavy sonic brew that reeks of promise on all fronts. Lead singer Eric Daughtry combines the styles of both Phil Anselmo & Randy Blythe into one lean and mean growling shout, and the guitar riffs and drum work throughout is crisp yet highly menacing. Tunes like "Rivers Bottom", "Sever the Ties", "Beast Burden" and the murderous "Knife in Hand" all bludgeon with evil intent, and it certainly doesn't hurt that the production by Larry Summers really helps matters, as the guitars are brimming with crunch & distortion, the vocals clear and imposing, and the drum work perfectly placed in the mix. Recently signed to Ironclad Records (the offshot Metal Blade label started up by Unearth's Trevor Phipps), The Destro have all the tools to be a serious player in the extreme metal world. Sure, this type of thing has been done before, but these guys have some serious chops and can create some kick ass metal songs, so a bright future seems apparent in their crystal ball.
