As a companion DVD to the Randy Brecker New Morning-The Geneva Concert comes this show from the same festival, with the late sax star Bob Berg also being backed by the Niels Lan Doky Trio. Recorded just two days earlier than the Brecker set, this sleek and sexy affair sees the quartet romp through five pieces of stunning and emotional jazz, with Berg's sizzling sax chops leading the charge at every turn. It's sad that a traffic accident took the life of this prime talent back in 2002, as Berg had all the tools to be a major star, which is truly evident if you watch this DVD. His soaring, husky lines permeate the sultry "Summer Nights" and the melodic grace of "When I Fall in Love", and the band does justice to the jazz classic "Straight No Chaser", complete with complex sax bursts, Lan Doky's wild piano excursions, Alvin Queen's intricate drum patterns, and the elastic acoustic bass yearnings from Pierre Boussaguet. Those who are more familiar with Berg's playing within an electric framework (thanks to his many recordings with both Miles Davis and guitarist Mike Stern) should easily adapt to the subtler, gentler arrangements here, but make no mistake about it, there's plenty of fire happening during this 90+ minute set. As an extra bonus there is an added song from the original show that didn't make it to the original release of this concert, plus a conversation with Berg just prior to his death. The jazz world misses you Bob!
