Back From Ashes: Broken

From Arizona comes Back From Ashes and their debut Broken, a solid metal platter that is well executed and produced, yet ultimately gives off a very familiar "been there, heard that" type of feeling. There's plenty of tradeoff's between clean melodic vocals and more aggressive shouts & growls, crunchy metal riffs, and pummeling drums. Tunes like "Welcome to Me", 'Father Fiction", and "Tightrope" all contain tons of melody to go along with their metalcore fury, but the problem is after a few spins it all starts to sound like any record from Sevendust, Disturbed, All That Remains, or any dozen of the latest metalcore or nu-metal acts. It's when these guys drop trying to be the next big thing and concentrate on brutal metal, like they do on "Walking the Line" and "Living a Lie", each piece featuring crushing guitar riffs and a nice balance between growls and melodic vocals, that they start to show their true colors. Granted, there's nothing bad with any of these songs, and "Goodbye" even has hit potential, while "Vicarious" is just heavy and technical enough to appeal to the prog-metal crowd. It's just that there's not a spark of originality here, and given that these days it's hard to stand out from the rest of the pack, I'd expect that Back From Ashes will take their obvious considerable talents to a new level the next time around and really try to wow us. Good melodies, good playing, now let's kick it up a notch guys.

Back From Ashes: Broken

My Score:

After listening to the album several times and having the opportunity to see this band live once, I don't see where the idea that there is no spark of originality comes from.
Although if I were a musician being accused of sounding to much like the likes of SevenDust or any of the other bands mentioned I would take that as a tremendous compliment.
I am also puzzeled by the thought that Welcome to me or living a lie are harder than tightrope although I agree that welcome to me and father fiction are of the slightly less METAL variety... but maybe thats what this band was going for.
I think the entire album, meaning every song, has HIT potential and I can't wait to hear what may come next from what I see as a great band.
I would give the album at least 4 stars based on the production itself and the fact that when I saw this band live, the performance was very close to identical to the production.
