The Somatic Defilement is the debut album from Knoxville death/grind band Whitechapel, now signed to Candlelight Records. This is one brutal piece of work, ten tracks littered with bone crunching guitar riffs and blood curdling vocals, sure to please fans of The Acacia Strain, The Black Dahlia Murder, Aborted, and The Red Chord. While much of the music is fairly technical ("Fairy Fay", "The Somatic Defilement"), there's also a certain amount of groove here that is hard to ignore, as the riffs play off the insistent rhythms and cookie monster growls quite well, giving most of the songs a beefy and flowing texture not often associated with the death metal & grind genres. Other tracks like "Ear to Ear" and "Festering Fiesta" just bristle with death metal ferocity and technical metal virtuosity, making The Somatic Defilement a very solid extreme metal release that shows plenty of promise for this new band looking to make their mark on the metal scene.
