Terhen: Eyes Unfolded

Introverts of the moody persuasion, Eyes Unfolded may be the one for you. The music found here is a slow-moving doom/death hybrid; executed by a minimalist ethic, with some romantic elements (female vocals, keyboards) imbuing the atmosphere. Terhen's music has interactive appeal insomuch as it invites you to lie down and listen, but that is where it stops. In other words, participation is strictly limited to the numbing feeling that the music provides you with. Don't expect typical song structures because this band writes more for sound than song. Compositions could be described as a "wandering into infinity," due to the long song length and slow build up. It almost seems as though the band kept adding more minutes to the songs as they were recording them. In spite of this, they are able to effectively create and hold the mood for the duration of the 50 plus minutes; keeping excitement and change to a minimum. These are very appealing characteristics to those who have lost interest in everyday life and enjoy a flatline pattern of existence. In short, it never breaks character.

For this writer, the band could use more dynamics in their loathsome overtures, but the excellent death style vocals performed by Jyri Pylvänäinen are a musical highlight. They seem to vacillate betwixt a growl and scream or even a harmonization of the two. This could have been a real disaster had they used those typical Crash Test Dummies clean style vocal meanderings found in much of gothic doom. Elongated ringing chords from both keyboard and guitar combined with straight forward drumming comprise the bulk of the sound found within. Nothing groundbreaking, but maintaining expectation seems to be the goal.

Not to bad for a band with an unstable lineup who secured their record deal after writing music for a fashion show. Ah… that's were those female vocals come into the picture.
