If the idea of Pendragon or Arena with a female vocalist charms you, you'll be smitten by this four-song EP by Caamora — essentially keyboardist Clive Nolan and vocalist Agnieszka Swita. Swita's earthbound voice is appealing and natural (think Candice Night, but wiser and not as giddy), and it's surrounded by lavish instrumentation courtesy of Nolan's wide-ranging repertoire. NEO guitarist Mark Westwood, Arena and IQ bassist John Jowitt and drummer Scott Higham are credited as guests, clearly establishing Caamara as an unlikely but mesmerizing duo.
Walk on Water, Caamora's second EP, contains two exclusive tracks and two other songs that will appear early next year on the ambitious double-CD She. Based on the novel of the same name by Victorian adventure writer H. Rider Haggard, She also will be performed live in Poland in October for a DVD release. Walk on Water's opening title track invites invigorating vocal interplay between Swita and Nolan (who sounds in fine voice here and should sing more often), while a sinister progressive-metal undercurrent pervades "Shadows." "I Can See Your House From Here" resonates with folk-pop overtones as Swita's voice takes on dimensions of serious songstresses like Paula Cole and Natalie Merchant, and the pretty closing ballad "Invisible" plays out with dramatic effect.
If this is any indication, the forthcoming She project will be one fine progressive-rock release.
