As one of Poland's most popular (and veteran) gothic-metal bands, Artrosis also is beginning to gain stature throughout the rest of the world, as English-language versions of their releases keep flowing into the international market. While, upon first listen to Melange, there may not be much here to separate this female-fronted trio from so many of its peers, further inspection reveals several progressive-tinged layers that will wrap themselves around your ears like a lonely serpent.
Granted, the rhythm section is canned and sometimes overpowers the real musicians, but there is still a depth here that's hard to find in much of today's by-the-numbers gothic metal. Take goddess-like singer Medeah, one of the most beautiful front women on the scene. She calls upon an arsenal of vocal inflections and styles to share her anger, sorrow and longing. As listeners, we feel her pain and empathize with her. And when Medeah closes Melange both singing and harmonizing with the brief lines to "A Yen" – "I wish I stayed where fate tastes sweeter than honey/I wish I stayed in the illusion/With one movement I throw our days into the void" – you'll almost want to follow her into that void. This is powerful stuff.
