Can these people be serious? Tzefa — the name means "viper" in Hebrew — pair hardcore-punk singer and guitarist Oleg Korenfeld with talented violinist and opera-queen-wannabe Slava Popova, resulting in one very disconcerting listening experience. Think Megadeth meets Nightwish.
Fortunately, Feed Me features only four songs. While plenty of metal bands (particularly ones from Europe) mix male and female vocals, the voices tend to complement each other. In the case of Tzefa (whose members hail from Russia, Latvia and the Ukraine) the vocals only accentuate why Popova and Korenfeld should be in different bands. Individually, their singing styles are impressive — Popova's operatic wails sound sensuous and passionate, and Korenfeld spews lyrics about anger and alienation with disdainful purpose.
That said, who knows? Melodic thrash opera may indeed have its place in progressive music, with Tzefa boldly leading the way. But don't hold your breath.
