Here are two examples of the longstanding partnership between keyboard & accordion player Heiner Goebbels and reed master Alfred Harth. ReR Megacorp has put together both Hommage/Vier Fauste Fur Hanns Eisler and Von Sprengen des Gartens (both originally 1979 releases) on this 2 CD set, remastered by the famous Bob Drake. You can safely file this in the avant-garde or free jazz genres, although there is also some of what would later be classified as RIO floating around this set. These two manage to pull off some intoxicating and mysterious sounds throughout these two discs, especially when Harth is squonking on his sax and Goebbels is tinkering away on the piano. At times the music here is utterly complex and caustic, yet you also get plenty of soothing and melodic jazz passages as well ("Rock Gegen Rechts" is especially nice) that help temper the more frantic pieces. For all the classy sounds permeating these two CD's, there's an aura of aggression on some of the songs (well, as aggressive as you can get with a saxophone and piano) that was probably influenced somewhat by the punk movement that was obviously exploding at the time. On some tracks, if the duo had added a few extra musicians, they could have easily come across as a European version of the band Oregon-if you don't believe me, check out the gorgeous & majestic sounds of "Los Campesinos", complete with some haunting clarinet and piano melodies.
Overall, these two releases will be of great interest to avant-jazz lovers of all ages.
