Raging Speedhorn: Before the Sea Was Built

Before the Sea Was Built is a good example of what progressive metal sounds like these days. It's very heavy and abstract with a subtle rhythmic texture that reveals itself over time. Although, not quite as endowed with finesse (this is more sludge based) as some of it peers like Intronaut, Neurosis or Isis, it still manages to push dissonant boundaries while remaining decidedly musical. The songs come at you one after another and slowly build themselves into towering sonic assaults with dual core-style vocals that actually fit the more aggressive slant on the progressive scene they are involved in.

The cd opens with "Everything Changes" a rather moody and hypnotizing Tool/Deftones style chord sequence with a title that is rather foretelling of the music that follows. Fueled by frustration and leading to open war could start to describe songs like "Born To Twist The Knife" and "Who Will Guard The Guards" which bring the intensity level up with their brash and raw attitude tempered by just enough production.. Many of the songs are propelled by chord and octaves strummed evenly in successive down-strokes while the drums chip away at the more progressive elements. This kind of playing can be somewhat reminiscent of grunge save for more attitude, playing ability and expansive sound dynamics, but none-the-less, an interesting listen. The band even throws a little bit of punk attitude into the mix with "Too Drunk to Give a Fuck" one of the cds best and most memorable tracks with its brief exploration of a hook; slightly more conventional than most of the other tracks. In comparing these songs to their past work, you will find them branching out considerably more outside of the Sabbath influence that originally influenced their sound.

Not necessarily a progressive revisionist, but certainly-- direct, experimental and refreshingly honest. Raging Speedhorn seems to be embracing change without compromise or making it too easy.
